| Customer Reviews: Not up to the job... June 18, 2010 Mr. Mr. Martyn (UK) We bought this camera a while ago for our 4year old who developed a healthy interest in taking photo's on our own digital camera. The delay whilst taking photo's was so long that he could not manage to take a decent photo and soon got bored of it rendering it an expensive mistake on our part. since then we have bought him a cheap digital camera that is up to the job and he now takes very good pictures by himself.
I feel that it is a complete waste of money for anyone who actually wants to educate their child. Dont buy it, it really isnt worth the feeling of letting your child down at Christmas as it is far to slow. I really do hope that vtech has addressed this problem in its later models. Taking decent photo's is about capturing a moment not ten seconds after it has happened. Your child understands this on some level even if you dont think they do. I am no photographer but my child may one day be as may yours. Get them a cheap half decent digital camera teach them to look after it and you will have done a much better job than if you had purchased this item and probably have spent about the same amount of money in the process
happy snapping
fun April 9, 2010 Mammysprincess (Newcastle Upon Tyne, England) Bought this as a gift for my nephew who enjoys taking photos, easy to use
Kids Camera March 14, 2010 Mrs. Sj Williams (UK) Very bad quality photos, BUT my daughter loves it and that's all that matters!!! The batteries seem to run out quite quickly and you have to remember this is a toy rather than a camera, but as my 7 year old is not David Bailey it doesn't really matter ;-)
What use is a camera when you can't see what you are taking? January 17, 2010 M. Harrison (London, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
When designing a 'junior' version of an adult product, it is crucial to understand what the needs are that need to be met in preparing it for a child. In the case of a digital camera, I guess there are three: what-I-see-is-what-I-get clarity, ease of use, and ruggedness.
Our three year old is obsessed with his mum's very cheap and simple mobile phone - or more particularly its photo and video capability. It doesn't say much for the Vtech camera that he prefers the mobile phone.
The reason is simple. The Vtech offers the child two means of looking at the image: a binocular viewfinder (and have you ever seen a small child successfully use that kind of viewfinder?); and a screen on the back of the camera - the standard viewing method for digital cameras nowadays. Five or ten years ago this might have seemed acceptable. But not now. The screen is small, and the quality is appalling. It is so bad that the child will struggle to make out an image indoors, or in artificial light; it even struggles outdoors on a gloomy day. This is such a fundamental failing the child is likely to lose interest immediately. But if you can persuade them to trust to blind faith and press the button, the quality of the image they capture will be extremely poor by current digital camera standards - even at this price.
It is great that the camera has a video function too, but since the image is just as poor in this mode, the benefit is more apparent than real.
When it comes to ease of use, the camera scores about 5 out of 10. There are few buttons, well located, but they are not entirely intuitive. Shouldn't a child's camera have one button to take the picture, and another beside it to see the result instantly? The Vtech isn't that straightforward - though it does go to the effort of providing a 'stamp' feature which overlays templated 'stamps' on your pictures. This seems pretty pointless: it's beyond the understanding of a very young child and an older one will find it laughable compared to computer game functionality.
For ruggedness the camera does much better. It's very graspable and solid. Ours has had insufficient use to be severely tested, but when thrown aside in frustration, it stands up pretty well...
I'm a bit of a fan of Vtech products generally, so I am puzzled that this one falls so far short of their normal standards.
One very happy nephew! January 13, 2010 Muggy This Christmas present became an extra appendage to my nephew; he yelled whenever it wasn't in reach and ran around like a crazy person popping some of the most dreadful photos I've ever seen. That said, he's just 4 1/2 years old and it simply gives him joy that he's like the grown-ups, taking his own photos. The thing worth noting is that he received masses of presents ... pirate ship, transformer, toy metal detector ... and this was the one that he kept to hand.
I would expect that it's colour (we bought blue) and design make it attractive to kids, too.
I agree that the photo quality is poor though that wasn't the reason that we bought this for him. He will surely learn things from having it and seeing such pleasure - and knowing he will be able to use it for some time to come - is the main thing.
I would add that the comments about battery life from other reviewers were most helpful so we bought a battery recharger and had the whole thing fully charged by the time he opened it.
